ROUGHNECKS AMONG LEAGUE ELITE
The Calgary Roughnecks became a member of the National Lacrosse League in 2001 when they were awarded as an expansion franchise. Since then, the Roughnecks have established themselves as one of the premier organizations within the NLL.
In 2004, the Roughnecks won their first League Championship and the coveted Champion's Cup in front of over 19,000 screaming fans. The Calgary Roughnecks completed the 2009 season in a bittersweet fashion again, winning the 2009 National Lacrosse League Championship for the second time since their inauguration.
The famous quote “There is no ‘I' in TEAM” speaks profusely to the Calgary Roughnecks bench. Any player, coach, owner, or fan would agree that the chemistry and cohesion of the Roughnecks this past season was what equaled the Roughnecks walking away with the Champion's Cup.
On Friday, May 15th 2009, the Roughnecks defeated the New York Titans with a victorious 12-10 championship win.
After one of their best seasons in franchise history, the 2009 Roughnecks' squad ended the regular season with a remarkable 12-4 record.
Though many teams in the NLL are owned by large conglomerates, including several National Hockey League clubs, the Roughnecks remain one of the few ‘mom and pop' operations.
Okotoks businessman Brad Banister has been principal owner and president from the club's inception and is considered to be the architect of the Roughnecks rapid rise to fame in the world of lacrosse. He's also responsible for attracting the signatures of such stars as Tracey Kelusky, Kaleb Toth, Lewis Ratcliff and Taylor Wray over the years.
