Calgary, AB - The National Lacrosse League announced today that Calgary Roughnecks rookie goaltender Frankie Scigliano is the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 16.
Scigliano, in his second career NLL start, allowed six goals on 44 shots-against in Calgary’s 9-6 victory over the Edmonton Rush last Saturday, including stopping 21-of-23 shots in the first half. The win clinched the West Division and top overall seed for Calgary, guaranteeing home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Roughnecks begin their run to the Champion’s Cup with a playoff edition of the Battle of Alberta on Saturday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. when they welcome the Rush. Radio broadcast on Sportsnet 960 The FAN begins at 7:00 p.m.
Rhys Duch, Frankie Scigliano, Mark Steenhuis and Jay Card have won the National Lacrosse League’s Player of the Week awards for Week 16.
Duch tied season highs with four goals, six assists and 10 points, and recorded five loose balls in Washington’s 16-13 loss to Toronto last Friday. It’s the second time Duch has received weekly offensive player honors this year.
Scigliano, a rookie netminder with Calgary, took the Defensive Player of the Week award. Making his second career NLL start in place of the injured Mike Poulin, Scigliano stopped 38 of 44 shots as the Roughnecks wrapped up their regular season with a 9-6 win over Edmonton on Saturday.
Steenhuis earned his second Transition Player of the Week award in 2012. He matched a season high with four goals and added four assists for a season-best eight points as Buffalo clinched a playoff spot with a 14-9 win over Rochester on Saturday.
Card is the latest Minnesota player named Rookie of the Week. He scored a goal and had three assists for a career high-tying four points, and collected four loose balls in a 15-10 win over Philadelphia on Saturday. A third-round selection in 2011, Card is the third Swarm rookie to win the weekly award, joining Evan Kirk and Jordan MacIntosh.
The weekly player award winners are selected by a vote of the league’s general managers and head coaches.
