RANGER MAKES TOP 50 - Calgary Roughnecks - News

Roughnecks veteran Scott Ranger comes in at #30 on the ILIndoor Top 50.

Consistency is a word that’s used a lot when looking at the top lacrosse players of today. And when it comes to Scott Ranger, there may be none better. The right-hander out of Nanaimo, B.C., hasn’t exactly set the National Lacrosse League world on fire with his scoring touch, but the 2013 season was a lot like the previous 6, a model of steadiness when it comes to point production. In the Western Lacrosse Association, he’s even more prolific. So really, it should come as no surprise to see Mr. Ranger crack ILIndoor’s list of the Top 50 because when it comes to consistency and scoring and being a legitimate offensive threat, he’s among the best.

Ranger scored 20 goals for the NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks last year, the fourth straight year he’s done so and the sixth time in seven seasons. The 53 points (20-33) was his lowest total in 3 seasons, but the consistency was again in full display as 2013 was Ranger’s sixth straight of 51 or more.

There’s a feeling that Ranger could produce more, much more, until you realize that in Calgary, he doesn’t have to. He’s surrounded by a strong cast where he doesn’t have to carry the weight and the maturity of Ranger’s game is that he’s perfectly fine with sharing the load as long as Calgary wins, which it does on a regular basis.

But if he’s on a team where he does have to shoulder the scoring load, like he was for years with the WLA’s Nanaimo Timbermen, he can do it. He proved that time and again with a pair of WLA scoring titles (2011, 2012) but that run ended with his trade to Victoria for 2013. He scored “just” 60 points (33-27) for the Shamrocks, but the situation there is much like it is in Calgary. Ranger didn’t have to be the offense, he just had to be a part of it.

The result was helping Victoria get to its first Mann Cup finals for the first time in 2006. Ranger had 22 points (13-9) in 8 WLA playoff games, but an injury limited his effectiveness at the Mann Cup, where carded just 5 points (2-3) in the 6-game loss to Six Nations.

There’s a lot to consider when looking at the work of Ranger. But through all the numbers, there is a clear consistency to admire and when it’s all said and done, that’s all anyone asks of any player to step on the floor.

ILIndoor’s take

“Ranger is an underestimated weapon in the Calgary Roughnecks system. Picked up as a released player from the San Jose Stealth in 2006, Scott has made a career in Cow Town as a looming right-handed threat averaging 50 points a year in red and black. Also impressive is his ability to stay healthy given his work ethic and edgy play. Playoff points have always been consistent showing the value he brings to Calgary’s “O” when others are being shut off.” – Marty O’Neill

“It’s got to be nice to be a Riggers coach, fan or player, knowing that this gun is on your side. He’s got such a smart game, recognizing when defensive attention is on teammates and taking it to the rack himself, or sitting back to draw attention to himself so he can find the open man. He’s good for 3 or 4 points every night with the occasional big game, like the 6-goal outing he had last winter against Minnesota.” – Bob Chavez

“How’s this for consistency? Ranger has scored between 19 and 29 goals for seven straight NLL seasons. He’s really been at his best, though, in the WLA, where he’s scored 30 goals eight times, 40 goals four times and 50 goals twice.” – Stephen Stamp
