Five-point efforts by Brayden Mayea and Tanner Cook weren’t enough to lead the Roughnecks to victory on Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome, as they fell 14-10 against the Halifax Thunderbirds at their Superhero Party presented by Pete the Plumber.
Mayea and Cook both scored twice and set up three others for the Roughnecks (2-9) in front of 9,496 fans at the Rough House, many of whom were dressed in their favourite superhero outfits.
Clarke Petterson helped the Thunderbirds (4-7) end their five-game losing streak by scoring five goals and setting up two others.

After giving up an early goal, the Riggers responded with a couple quick ones of their own.
Riley Loewen started things off when he took a pass from Pace in front of the net before depositing a quick shot into the net over Halifax goalie Warren Hill’s left shoulder at 2:35 of the first quarter.
Just 46 seconds later, Noah Manning put the Riggers up 2-1 after he beat Hill through the legs with a long-range sidearm shot through traffic.
Following a pair of goals by the visitors, Mayea drew the homeside even at 3-3 with a highlight-reel–goal-of-the-year candidate. Mayea cut towards the net and took a behind-the-back pass from Cook before leaping through the air and depositing an over-the-shoulder shot past a surprised Hill.

After Manning scored his second of the game on a breakaway at 8:26, the T-Birds responded with two quick goals to take a 6-5 lead.
Pace then snapped a shot past Hill at 8:26 before Mayea converted a feed from Liam Leclair 2:03 later to put the ’Necks back up 7-6.
Halifax scored a pair of late goals in the second quarter to take an 8-7 lead into the halftime intermission.
Cook counted his 30th goal of the season 52 seconds into the third quarter to even up the score at 8-8.

The T-Birds then went on a five-goal run that was capped off by two of Petterson’s five goals to give Halifax a 13-8 lead heading into the final frame.
Dickson took a pass from Mayea and wired a high shot just under the crossbar past Hill at 2:18 of the fourth quarter.
Cook then rounded out the scoring with 1:41 to play when he fought off a check from T-Birds defender Ryan Terefenko before fooling Hill with a behind-the-back shot of his own.
