CALGARY, AB — It’s been three weeks since we last updated the Roughnecks’ players undertakings in the Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) League and plenty has happened.
The Oakville Rock’s Wesley Berg has been on a tear, scoring 16 goals in five games, putting him in sole possession of first place among goal scorers in the MSL with 28 markers. In those five games, the righty added seven assists, bringing his season point total to 45, which is good for fifth in the league.
During this streak, Berg registered his fourth power play goal and he added his second shorthanded goal. He was also quite disciplined, not registering a single penalty minute.
Rock teammate Dan MacRae played in three games and found the scoresheet in each of the contests. His four assists brought his season tally to nine points in 11 games.
Speaking of scoring from the back-end, another Roughnecks defender was doing that as well over the last few weeks.
Tyson Bell ended the month of June with a couple very big games for the Brampton Excelsiors. The lefty defender netted the opening goal of each contest and proceeded to add another point in each game. Despite not finding the scoresheet in July, Bell still racked up three goals and one assist in four games.
Bell was also involved in some rough stuff. He and Cobourg Kodiaks defenceman Broedie Birkhof dropped the gloves in the first period and were slapped with five-minute majors and game misconducts.
Between the pipes in Brooklin, Mike Poulin made an appearance on the floor in three games for the Redmen. Taking a slight back seat to Zack Higgins, Poulin impressed in each of his starts.
The veteran netminder began by helping Brooklin take down the Excelsiors 15-8, making 51 saves on 59 shots. He followed that performance with a 41-save victory against the Six Nations Chiefs. In his third start, the Poulin Wall was strong once again. He held the Kodiaks offence in check in the 11-9 win, his third straight.
Sticking with the Redmen, lefty forward Reilly O’Connor suited up for four games during this span. In their most recent game, O’Connor was held pointless, but Brooklin escaped with an 11-9 win regardless. That scoreless game was a lone occurrence as the lefty found the scoresheet in his other three contests.
O’Connor began with a trio of assists against Brampton and followed that by scoring a goal and an assist against the Chiefs. His best effort came against the Kodiaks as he registered two goals and two assists, en route to a 16-7 win.
