LANGLEY, BC – Dane Dobbie set a new franchise record for goals scored in a season while leading the Calgary Roughnecks to a 14-8 win over the Vancouver Stealth on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

Dobbie had a hat trick to finish the season with 51 goals, breaking the previous record of 50 set by Lewis Ratcliff in the 2007 season.

“It’s nice to get three goals tonight and set that (record), but it has a lot to do with our offence and guys moving the ball and finding me when I was open,” Dobbie said. “It was a good all-around offensive game for us and an all-around good game for everybody.”

Dobbie also set up a pair of goals to finish the game with five points as the Roughnecks (12-6) won their fourth straight game against the Stealth (4-14) to sweep the season series.

“They’ve got a good team,” Dobbie said. “Their record doesn’t show for what it is. I’m sure they’ll be back next year and they’ll be a team to reckon with. This year we had their number and it was really good.”

Shawn Evans also recorded a hat trick and added four assists to finish the season with 105 points, good for second in National Lacrosse League scoring behind Cody Jamieson of the Rochester Knighthawks, who put up 108 points.

Jeff Shattler chipped in with two goals and four assists, while Curtis Dickson (3g), Geoff Snider (1g, 1a), Garrett McIntosh (1g), Karsen Leung (1g), Scott Ranger (4a) and Daryl Veltman (2a) also contributed to the winning cause.

“We got a lot of good performances out of everybody,” said Calgary assistant coach Bob McMahon, who noted that the Stealth played a solid game despite playing the night before (a 10-5 road loss to the Edmonton Rush). “They played really hard and they forced us to play hard, which was beneficial for us. We want to be good going into the playoffs.”

Mike Poulin made 33 saves in the Calgary net to record his 12th win of the season. Frankie Scigliano saw action in the fourth quarter and stopped three of four shots he faced.

Tyler Digby and Rhys Duch led the Stealth attack with two goals and an assist each, while Cody Bremner had a goal and two assists. Ilija Gajic, Justin Salt and Tyler Garrison also scored for Vancouver, while goalie Matt Roik finished with 42 saves in a losing cause.

McIntosh converted a feed from Ranger to put the Riggers up 1-0 at 3:36 of the first quarter. After more than seven minutes of scoreless action, Evans then scored to put Calgary up by a pair.

Garrison scored on a breakaway at 14:11 of the opening frame before Dobbie and Snider counted shorthanded goals eight seconds apart shortly thereafter to give the Riggers a 4-1 lead.

With Vancouver’s Matt Beers serving a five-minute fighting major, Dickson and Dobbie counted power-play goals early in the second to extend Calgary’s lead.

After Salt and Digby replied for the Stealth, Dobbie completed his hat trick goal at 13:07 of the second. Calgary captain Andrew McBride promptly scooped up the ball as a souvenir for Dobbie to commemorate his record-setting 51st goal of the season.

“It’s pretty cool that the team recognized that,” Dobbie said. “It was good to get it in the first half, but I saw chances all game.”

Vancouver answered right back with a goal by Gajic just 13 seconds later before Shattler scored as the buzzer sounded to end the first half to put Calgary up 8-4.

The ’Necks outscored the Stealth 3-2 in the third quarter on goals by Evans, Leung and Dickson to take an 11-6 lead into the final frame.

Evans and Dickson both counted their hat-trick markers in the fourth, while Shattler counted his second goal and sixth point of the game with 49 seconds remaining in the contest to round out the scoring.

With the regular season complete, the Roughnecks will now get set to host the Colorado Mammoth (8-10) in the opening round of the NLL playoffs at the Scotiabank Saddledome next Saturday, May 3 (7 p.m.).

“I think we’ve got about six hours to celebrate our season and then we’ve got to turn around and worry about Colorado,” Dobbie said. “We don’t want to end our season on a sour note like we’ve done the last couple, so we’ve got to prepare for Colorado. I know our guys will be at our best. I know our whole locker room is excited and we’ve got a healthy locker room and we can’t wait to get on the turf next Saturday.”

The winner will then move on to play the Edmonton Rush (16-2) in a two-game series, with the victor advancing to the NLL Champion’s Cup series.
