The Calgary Roughnecks made eight selections in the 2024 NLL Draft on Sunday night including two in the first round.

Of the eight picks two are born and raised Calgarians.

“We’ve selected eight quality athletes that will come to camp prepared to compete hard to earn a spot on our roster,”said general manager Mike Board.

ROUND 1

5th Overall: LF Brayden Mayea, St. Catharines Athletics Jr. A & High Point

Roughnecks fifth overall pick Brayden Mayea joins the Roughnecks as a player who has put the ball in the net consistently over his four seasons at High Point. The lefty forward had 163 goals in 61 games including three-straight seasons with 40 or more goals.

“Brayden is a natural goal scorer, and I don’t expect things to be any different with him coming into the NLL,” said Head Coach Josh Sanderson. “There will be an adjustment as he comes back to the box game, but no question that he will be a high end goal scorer, his compete level is exceptional.”

 

10th Overall: LD Jack Follows, Cornell, Oakville Rock Sr. A

The Roughnecks went with a defender with their second pick of the first round. The Oakville, ON. native had 76 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers in 35 games played in his three years with Cornell. In 14 games with Oakville this summer Follows had three goals and three assists.

“Jack has been good defensively all the way through, we’re happy to draft a character player that competes as hard as he does” said Sanderson.

 

ROUND 3

33rd Overall: G Colby Bowman, Nanaimo Timbermen Sr. A

Goaltender Colby Bowman went 33rd overall to the Roughnecks. In his first season with the senior team in Nanaimo he went 3-4-1 with an .804 save percentage and a 10.13 goals against average.

“We’re extremely happy to get Colby where we did,” Sanderson said. “We think he’s a great young goalie that is only going to get better as the years go on, taking more shots and playing summer ball and developing with us. We’re really happy to grab him and I think he has got a bright future.”

 

ROUND 4

48th Overall: RF Austin Ducommun, Towson University & New Westminster Salmonbellies

The 6’5 forward played midfield at Towson. He had 11 goals and 17 assists in 17 games played this summer with New Westminster in his rookie WLA season.

 

54th Overall: LD Carter Cook, Calgary Mountaineers Jr. A

Cook was the 2023 transition player of the year with the Calgary Mounties. This season, he had four goals and 11 assists in nine games played.

 

ROUND 5

62nd Overall: D Aiden Hindson, New Westminster Jr. A

The stay-at-home defenceman had 15 points over three seasons with the Jr. A Salmonbellies.

 

66th Overall: RD/FO Luke Williams, Marquette University

Williams was a standout at Marquette finishing third in school history with 212 ground balls. Williams also won over 54 percent of his faceoffs (386/714) over his four years.

ROUND 6

77th Overall: RF Ben Foster, Maryville University

Foster had 39 goals in 47 games over four seasons at Maryville. The Calgary native spent four seasons with the Jr. A Mounties from 2017-2021.

 

 

The Roughnecks will kick off camp with these new faces at the beginning of November. The home opener goes Dec. 28 when the Riggers host Vancouver.
