CALGARY, AB — The Calgary Roughnecks were at home for Week 10 of the NLL season, taking on Cody Jamieson and the Rochester Knighthawks. The Roughnecks and Knighthawks went back and forth in the contest, with the lead changing hands seven times. Needing overtime, it was the Knighthawks who took advantage early and took the game 9-8.

Here are five things we noticed in the game:

1) O’CONNOR’S GOAL

Known more for being a passer, Reilly O’Connor has been showing his scoring touch lately. That being said, most of the goals have come from shots on the outside. With his increased role in recent weeks, he’s shown significantly more confidence in his game and he proved that on Saturday when he went one on one against Brad Self of the Knighthawks and muscled his way to the net for a pretty goal.

Let’s hope he continues to go after defenders and put home some more great goals!

2) THE POULIN WALL

After a strong performance against the Saskatchewan Rush, the Roughnecks once again called up veteran goalie Mike Poulin. And once again, Poulin gave Calgary a tremendous effort between the pipes, giving them a chance to win the game. The veteran netminder made 37 saves on 46 shots and was fantastic down the stretch, allowing only one goal in the fourth quarter.

The Poulin Wall hit a milestone on Saturday as well. The former Goaltender of the Year reached the 3000-save plateau early in the first quarter and now sits at 3032 saves, with more to come!

3) TWO FOR TWO

Two games with the Roughnecks for Tyler Burton. Two goals for Tyler Burton.

The new Roughneck has been a welcome addition and has made an impression on the fans. The transition player has been taking face-offs, playing defence, and scoring – something Calgary has needed from the back-end. Playing against his former team this past weekend, Burton grabbed a loose ball and was off to the races. With only Matt Vinc between him and the net, the righty sniped one top corner – in similar fashion to his goal last weekend.

4) PK

While the Roughnecks power play has been sputtering lately, Calgary’s penalty kill has continued to be excellent. In five penalty kill situations against the Knighthawks, the Roughnecks defence was able to hold Cody Jamieson and company to only one goal. At Scotiabank Saddledome this season, Calgary has allowed only 14 power play goals to their opponents on 32 opportunities. That equates to 56.25%, which is better than their cumulative PK percentage of 52.73%. There’s nothing like home cooking for this Roughnecks penalty kill.

5) LEUNG

Karen Leung held a spot on this list last week, but he’s earned his way back on the list. He had a slow start to the season, but now he has points in five straight games and goals in the last three. For a guy that plays significant minutes in the defensive zone, being able to run the floor and score is a huge asset for the Roughnecks. Leung has 11 goals in each of his first two seasons, so he will need to keep this goal scoring streak going if he wants to match that total once again this season.
