The Calgary Roughnecks today announce that Zach Currier has been named to the team’s leadership group as Assistant Captain, joining Eli Salama in the role. Jesse King remains Captain for the 2023-24 season.
“It was an easy choice this year, with [King, Salama and Currier] already being incredible leaders on and off the floor,” said Head Coach Josh Sanderson, “They’ve been good for us since day one and so they’ll we wearing the letters for us this season, starting tonight in Sask.”
“It feels really special to wear the A for this group” said Currier, “I am really looking forward to getting the season under way and getting back in front of our fans at the Rough House.”
29-year-old Currier has played his entire NLL career with the Calgary Roughnecks and is entering his sixth season in the NLL. A product of Peterborough, Ontario, Currier was awarded the NLL Transition Player of the Year and named to the All-Pro First Team in back-to-back years (2022, 2023). Previously, he was named to the All-Pro Second Team on two occasions (2018, 2019) and was also named to the 2018 All-Rookie Team. Currier has recorded 112 points (43g, 69a) in 82 games with the Roughnecks while scooping up 758 loose balls and causing 163 turnovers.
Captain Jesse King is entering his sixth season with Calgary, and ninth season in the NLL, whilst Assistant Eli Salama begins his sixth with Calgary.
Currier will have his first experience wearing the A tonight when the Roughnecks take on the Saskatchewan Rush in a preseason match-up in Moose Jaw, SK at 6pm MST. Fans can follow along on X via @NLLRoughnecks for live game updates.
